The first European settlers arrived in the area that is now Port Byron, Illinois in 1828. At that time, the land was part of the territory of the Potawatomi people. During the Black Hawk War of 1832, settlers temporarily left the area and relocated to Fort Armstrong on Rock Island, located about 12 miles downstream along the Mississippi River. Once the conflict ended, the settlers returned and continued developing the community.
In the years that followed, the Syms brothers established a wood yard that supplied firewood to steamboats transporting lead from Galena to St. Louis, helping support early river commerce. The town was officially platted in 1836 and named Port Byron in honor of the English poet Lord Byron. As the village grew, several businesses emerged, including the production of quicklime, which was created from the area’s abundant limestone and used in construction. This industry attracted a number of Swedish immigrants, who contributed to the area’s cultural and economic development.
Port Byron was officially incorporated in 1877, and over time it has developed into a desirable Mississippi River community. Today, Port Byron real estate continues to be sought after for its scenic river views, historic charm, and welcoming small-town atmosphere.
